“This year, the USDA is proposing that more farms consider a gruesome approach to the problem: a procedure known as ventilation shutdown, in which the ventilation systems for massive poultry barns are turned off, allowing the interior air to reach temperatures of up to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, which will kill the birds slowly over the course of 20 minutes to, potentially, hours.”
